The Power of Progesterone

Hormones: they can really F with you! Amirite?

  • Tired of feeling tired every afternoon?

  • Do you dread your monthly period OR are you having irregular periods?

  • Or are you peri-menopausal and wondering how to go through the transition without a shit show of hot flashes?

Well, you might be low in progesterone.

(Keep reading and below I have a freebie gift for YOU to help balance your hormones)

Today, we are going to talk about one of the MAC DADDIES of hormones: Progesterone.

Wait, what’s progesterone? Don’t we need to just be concerned with estrogen?

(Nope, not that simple)

As a woman, you have many different hormones working together to create the life-giving ability that us creators have!

If these kick-ass chemical messengers are functioning sub-optimally, you can have harsh cramps and unrelenting bitchiness (I’m convinced all “Karen's” have hormonal imbalances), chronic afternoon lagging, stubborn midsection weight gain AND it can sadly affect your fertility. You can also develop things like fibroids and endometriosis!

One of the hormones to be aware of is progesterone. Let’s talk about this superstar of a hormone!

About Progesterone

First off, understand that hormones are like a symphony. They all work together. And in the female hormonal cycle, estrogen and progesterone work in close union together every month.

In a regular cycle, progesterone levels rise just after ovulation occurs to sustain the lining of the uterus.

Then, if no pregnancy has happened, progesterone drops which stimulates your cycle.

Also, progesterone is a precursor to cortisol (your stress hormone), and is needed in GOOD amounts for a proper stress response.

And if you have lower progesterone, you can have relative estrogen dominance. (Which is no picnic!)

Progesterone is among the main hormone women need to keep balanced, alongside estrogen, estradiol, and testosterone.

Why You Need Progesterone

SO many dang reasons! The reason health practitioners are concerned about progesterone levels is because of how much it impacts your body. Not just your gynecological health, but also your mental health as well.

Here are some of the primary benefits of having the right amounts of progesterone in your body:

- Maintaining the lining of your uterus - Working as a diuretic - Working alongside other sex hormones - Helping to reduce severity of your PMS symptoms - Building strong bones - Burning fat for energy - Helping with your thyroid health - Maintaining proper blood clotting

There are also other benefits, including helping you to become pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy, and even playing a role in how severe your depression is.

How do you know you are low in progesterone? Common symptoms include:

  • Irregular periods

  • Infertility

  • Headaches/migraines

  • Mood changes, anxiety/depression

  • Hot flashes

  • Weight gain

  • Fibroids, Endometriosis

How to Improve Progesterone Levels

If you feel that you are suffering from a hormonal imbalance, you are not alone. Many women deal with this problem every day.

Luckily, there are some different ways you can balance your hormone levels, including progesterone, without medications. These often include changing your lifestyle to be healthier, from eating a healthy diet to making sure you exercise regularly.

You also want to cut back on unhealthy habits like drinking, consuming toxic vegetable/seed oils and not getting enough sleep.

In some cases, bio-identical hormones can be helpful, but this is something to discuss with your holistic healthcare professional.

Nutrition for progesterone Some nutrients to focus on when trying to boost progesterone:

  • Zinc (beef, seafood, pumpkin seeds and nuts)

  • B6 (Sunflower seeds, fish, chicken, liver, avocado, sweet potatoes, turkey)

  • Magnesium (spinach, fish, dark chocolate, nuts and seeds)

  • Vitamin C (Broccoli, kiwi, oranges, yellow peppers)

  • L-Arginine (Salmon, lentils, chicken, pork, beef)

How do you know for sure if you have low progesterone?

Test, don’t guess!

I really love the DUTCH Complete hormone test to look at sex and adrenal hormones, including progesterone and its metabolites and run it on most of my clients. From there I can suggest targeted supplementation and an actionable nutrition and lifestyle plan to go from barely surviving to thriving!

In the meantime, I want to offer you a little freebie I created for you:
